I found this interesting 80s documentary "Captive Minds" [1] on how cults use subtle brainwashing to convince their followers. It's quite interesting how they recruited young people looking for direction and convinced them to believe total bullshit.
1. "A conflict between what they have been brought up to believe and this new belief sets up a battle in the mind of the recruit which can lead to total confusion."
The interviewee had internal conflicts, arguing with herself. Her rational self knew this was wrong, but another little voice told her to hush up and go along with everyone else, don't make trouble.
2. "The group must always be made to feel that they are right. Others are wrong, or better yet, evil."
Sound familiar?
3. "Groups which have all powerful leaders who control the environment, control all information, and eventually control the way their followers think have one basic thing in common- they have found people who are willing to take that essential first step of surrendering to an authority figure they hope has all the answers. Throughout history, many people have taken that first step. Sometimes joining a small group, sometimes a large group, and sometimes a group that engulfs an entire nation." (Huge crowds chanting Sieg Heil)
Is this system of conditioning being used on a mass scale America today?
1. Confusion
Over the last few years, Bush has tried to create a racist hatred of Arabs, calling Islam a "radical ideology of hatred". Now all of a sudden he wants to give them control over our ports. Confusion.
We all grew up knowing that the US would never start a war of aggression. We would never condone torture. We are the land of the free, the land of equal opportunity, the country where truth and justice reigns. Every citizen has basic rights to free speech, the right to a fair trial, etc... Bush claims to be fighting for these same beliefs, even though we see the exact opposite is true. Total Confusion.
2. Label those who disagree anti-troops.
Right-wingers like Ann Coulter, Bill O'Reilly and others frequently advocate violence against fellow Americans they disagree with.
3. With total control of the mainstream media, Bush & Co are convincing followers to give up their Constitutional Rights, to just "trust them".
Have millions of Americans taken that "first step of surrendering to an authority figure they hope has all the answers?"
Unfortunately, the video didn't have the answer on how to break the spell- but odds are breaking the "total control of information" has a lot to do with it, perhaps taking back the media is the first step.
