This is my Letter to the Editor, variations were sent to every Alaska newspaper (list of emails below)
Fellow Alaskans, are you concerned about what's happening in the world? Is prophecy being played out, perhaps we're going to live Armageddon?
What if it's not pre-determined scripture, but Eisenhower's warning come to life: the military-industrial complex. After several years of close study, I can tell you with confidence that the latter is the case, and that we are indeed being led down a path of perpetual war.
Of course we all want to believe America is the white knight, that our soldiers are making the world safer for all. Unfortunately, there is considerable evidence to the contrary.
The evidence indicates that Martin Luther King Jr. was right, when he proclaimed 365 days before his death, “The greatest purveyor of violence in the world today, our own government.”
It appears that Howard Zinn is right, “we're not trying to bring liberty to Iraq, we're trying to bludgeon them into submission.”
Recent polls show that 80% of Iraqis want us to leave their country, but Bush and Congress say we must stay the course. Are we staying to liberate, or complete permanent bases and secure the drilling rights for big oil?
The wars in the Middle East are generating more worldwide hatred of US, recruiting more terrorists- why is this a course we must stay on? Will we ever get them all? Or is it a formula for endless war?
Who is benefitting financially from the wars? The military-industrial complex- the weapons makers, halliburton, big oil. The executive branch has benefitted by asserting ever more power. In the name of protecting us, our freedoms are being stripped before our eyes.
From the Patriot Act to illegal spying on US citizens, Bush and Congress have failed in their sworn duty to uphold and defend the Constitution.
I believe that it is our duty to restore accountability in Washington, DC. I am running for Congress to present a clear opposition to the current path of the US government.
