USA: There are Still 250,000 Homeless Veterans

HUD Testimony to Congress - Sept 20, 2001

At least 600,000 people in this country are homeless on any given night. VA estimates that more than a quarter million are veterans; of those, approximately 80 percent are disabled. Each year, half a million veterans find themselves without a home at some point.

...HUD will provide approximately $150 million in Emergency Shelter Grants for FY 2002. These grants are used for the rehabilitation or conversion of buildings into homeless shelters...

And how is the situation today, 4.5 years later? The same, if not worse.
From the Whitehouse website 2006 FY Budget

VA estimates that there are more than 250,000 homeless veterans in the Nation, or one-third of the adult homeless population.

Five years later and there are still 250,000 homeless vets? I think with common sense and true compassion, we could help these people out- within a year.

Why are they still homeless? The $150 million was to "convert buildings into homeless shelters" - typical - the money goes to landowners - not the homeless themselves.

As ususal, it's "All American" for the gov't to give millions to wealthy landowners, but it's "welfare handouts to bums" if you give it the poor.

The VA needs to stop wasting

The VA needs to stop wasting all that money on phoney-baloney 12-step religious treatment, mental health groups, nasty shelters, and useless "life skills". The homeless veterans need immediate real housing and real living-wage job/career training. Real housing and Real training NOW! Poverty is the only thing the veterans need to aleviate! And that's a fact, Jack.

This is pretty sad. I

This is pretty sad. I actually ran into a guy who said he was the real location of the movie black hawk down. Forgive me for not knowing the name of the place, for my educational system did not treat me very well, but I degress. He was homeless, a decently nice guy although obviously messed up from the conflict or his vises. He kinda scarred me at one moment as he was asking for money, stepped in close and in a serious low vioce asked me for money(im a poor youngster on his own for the first time). I told him i had no money, and he stepped off and told him I had to go and thanked him for what he did. Its sad that our goverment uses up its young and discards them off once there of no more use. "Hey there kiddo, have fun over there? alright heres a pat on the back and off to civilization you go. Hope those years risking your life and mentality set of the military world treats you well and gets you a nice comfy home."

You have to wonder why

The homeless veterans

#79 On Mon, 2006 03 06 03:55 A Citizen said,

The homeless veterans usually get addicted to alcohol and drugs thats where they spend all their money. Therefore I do not find it befit to give them the money but to give money to a shelter which teaches sense of responsibility, and takes away alcohol addiction. The homeless veterans I know get $1200/mt cash, with that much they can have a place of their own, and lead a decent life.

Help them to help themselves!!!

The shame is ex- Marine,

The shame is ex- Marine, aviator, politician "Duke" Cunningham will still have a better life in Federal Prison when compared to our homeless, unemployed vets. He should spend the next 8.5 yrs. working with these vets. Perhaps he has a soul and can redeem himself somewhat. Where are all the appropriations he was responsible for which addressed vet issues? Gone to his pals who made kick-backs. Feed him MRE's and let him clean bed pans in a vet hospital. What a shame. You enlist, willing to defend your country, get hurt, or not, come back home to no job and no support system. Seems to me that every enlistee should get an enlistment bonus which should be held until he/she gets out. This money (and not only 10K) should give the vet a good start in civ. life. Somehow, however they will find a way to srew the vet out of this money. I just know it.

Extremely dangerous movie

I WAS A HOMELESS VET WHO WENT TO SCHOOL FOUND SHELTER AND MADE A GOOD LIVING UNTIL NOW.

AFTER 911 I WAS LAYED OFF AND HAVE BEEN HAVING A HARD TIME FINDING ANY WORK. I FELL BACK ON MY OLD SKILLS AS A CARPENTER BUT THE ECONOMY IS A WRECK. THE ELECTED AND CORPORATIONS FIND PROFITS IN EMPLOYING OTHER THAN AMERICANS. WE NEED TO WAKE UP AND STOP BUYING THIS CHEEP CRAP FROM OVER SEAS. WE NEED TO INVEST IN OUR NATIONS' FUTURE AND WE ALL WILL PROSPER.

THIS WILL ONLY HAPPEN IF THERE IS A PARADIGM SHIFT IN WASHINGTON AND THE CULTURE OF CORRUPTION STAMPED OUT. PROFITS ABOVE ONES MORAL OBLIGATION TO ONES NATION AND PEOPLES SEEMS TO BE THE DRIVING FORCE IN OUR ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES. SELF SERVING POLITICIANS ARE DESTROYING OUR NATION AND MANY JUST SIT BY AND WATCH IN HORROR WHILE OTHERS HAVE NOT A CLUE. WE ARE BEING DESTROYED NOT BY TERRORIST BUT BY PLUNDERERS WHO UNDER THE GUISE OF BEING ELECTED IN OUR INTEREST. I DO NOT HAVE THE ANSWERS. THE PROBLEM NEEDS ADDRESSED I FEAR WE ARE AT A POINT OF NO RETURN OUR RIGHTS STRIPPED AWAY OUR LIBERTIES TRAMPLED AND AT A TIME WHEN THESE VERY TOOLS ARE NEEDED TO FIGHT BACK THE CORRUPTION. WHAT RECOURSE AS A PEOPLE DO WE HAVE WHEN WE TRULY LOST OUR VOICE OUR PETITIONS GO UNHEARD OUR VOTE MISCOUNTED. ONLY IN NUMBERS AND SOLIDARITY AND UNITY CAN WE FIGHT THIS EVIL IN OUR LAND. NOW WHEN WE ORGANIZE WE ARE SPIED UPON AND DISCREDITED AND SUBJUGATED AND HARASSED. WHAT DO WE DO EACH OF US, WHAT ARE WE TO DO ASK YOUR SELF WHAT CAN I DO ?

I am a 100% service

I am a 100% service connected disabled Veteran, from the war in Iraq.

Even though I receive enough income to live on, I cannot buy a house, as I have civilian medical bills, for seeking and receiving, medical treatment for emergency room medical care. I sought treatment, because of illness and injury, from the war, now the VA refuses to pay what they owe.

This has ruined my credit. Also, what ruined my credit, was not having a source of income for two years, while the VA decided my case. Why sure, I had a ton of medical evidence, not only on active duty, but with the VA. Yet the VA drug their feet as long as they could. They cheated me out of two years back pay.

Now my credit is runied, the VA denies me at every turn they can, even though I have a mountain of medical evidence, proving service connection injury.

Yes, The VA recognizes and has approved my claim based on that evidence, but they refuse to pay medical bills, for care I had to seek, again, for the injuries in the war.

I am doomed to live in rental housing. Evry day I struggle to remain, sane.

Could be any day I will slip under depression, and wind up on the street to. I can see it coming down the road.

Never again, will I serve this counrty, and at all times I tell everyone I get the chance, to not enlist. Skip the military, go to college, or go get a job.

The best thing I can advise, is to keep as many folks as I can from enlisting.

Great Movies to educate

Great Movies to educate friends and family about the reality of Homeless Veterans. It is truly astounding that Bush and Co can get away with claiming they support the troops when you see how these young kids have been ignored and screwed by the system.
