Genetically Modified Superhumans now a possibility

Filed under: Spooky technology — ben @ 10:03 pm

A baby born in Germany lacked the gene that produced myostation, a muscle growth inhibitor, now athletes mad scientists and evil billionaires are drooling at the possibilities.

Somewhere in Germany is a baby Superman, born in Berlin with bulging arm and leg muscles. Not yet 5, he can hold seven-pound weights with arms extended, something many adults cannot do. He has muscles twice the size of other kids his age and half their body fat.

DNA testing showed why: The boy has a genetic mutation that boosts muscle growth.

Many scientists believe the find could eventually lead to drugs for treating people with muscular dystrophy and other muscle-destroying conditions. And athletes would almost surely want to get their hands on such a drug and use it like steroids to bulk up.

And evil billionaires would almost surely want to use this to create a new breed of supercop…

Dick Cheney in his bunker, “these guys are ok, but it’d sure be cool if they were genetically modified to be 7′ tall, do-whatever-we-say, goons… muahaahaahaahaa!” (bites pinky finger)

It sounds like I’m joking, but I’m afraid not…. this is what myostatin-blocked GM Beef look like

Imagine the new ‘Secret Service Uniformed Division’ staffed with cops built like that.

And whaddya know- they have found the stupid gene as well:

Scientists in North Carolina say they have identified a gene that affects IQ.. The new research could also have ethical implications because the effect of the gene appears to be quite dramatic: The scientists say that males who inherit a particular version of the gene have, on average, an IQ that is 20 points lower than males who don’t.

Through Suggestability: ‘We can implant entirely false memories’

Guardian UK: ‘We can implant entirely false memories’

Alan Alda had nothing against hard-boiled eggs until last spring. Then the actor, better known as Hawkeye from M*A*S*H, paid a visit to the University of California, Irvine. In his new guise as host of a science series on American TV, he was exploring the subject of memory. The researchers showed him round, and afterwards took him for a picnic in the park. By the time he came to leave, he had developed a dislike of hard-boiled eggs based on a memory of having made himself sick on them as a child - something that never happened.

Someone should study how effective Fox News is at using this technique to trick viewers into believing entirely false versions of recent history.

Trauma Pill can erase bad memories

Filed under: Spooky technology — ben @ 6:34 pm

Great news, a pill to erase memories- it’s not like it could ever be misused, right?

Some doctors have an even more ambitious goal: trying to cure PTSD. They are deliberately triggering very old bad memories and then giving the pill to deep-six them.

The first study to test this approach on 19 longtime PTSD sufferers has provided early encouraging results, Canadian and Harvard University researchers report.

“We figure we need to test about 10 more people until we’ve got solid evidence.” said Alain Brunet, a psychologist at McGill University in Montreal who is leading the study.

It can’t come too soon.

The need for better treatment grows daily as American troops return from Iraq and Afghanistan with wounded minds as well as bodies. One government survey found almost 1 in 6 showing symptoms of mental stress, including many with post-traumatic stress disorder. Disability payments related to the illness cost the government more than $4 billion a year.

So instead of helping the troops truly heal, we’re going to give them drugs to suppress their memories…? Sounds like a quick fix- I wonder if the memories could resurface down the road… ah, who cares- the FDA is streamlining the approval process…. no long-term research necessary- 29 subjects is “solid evidence”!

Trust in a bottle

Trust in a Bottle- Imagine the possibilities!

Some people smell fear in potential business partners. Others smell a rat. But individuals who smell a certain brain hormone become unusually trusting of others in financial transactions, according to a new report.

I wonder if this is how they are passing all that crap in Congress??? Then there’s this:

Worries may arise that crowds of people will be sprayed with oxytocin at political rallies or other events to induce trust in speakers…

But our wonderful leaders in America would never think of such a thing. :-p

And it is currently available, for good purposes:

The hormone, which is currently available as a medication to help induce or speed up labor, could one day be used to ease other, more complicated problems. “There’s evidence that neglected children may experience permanent brain changes,” says Zak. For those kids, treatment with oxytocin could allow them to form close bonds.

This sounds like yet another product that the mafia is going to love, in fact I think they’re using it already…

Martin Luther King Jr on Vietnam- text, pics & audio

What would he be doing today? …. In his honor, wouldn’t it be cool to burn these mp3s of MLK, go to a church (with a lot of friends to stand with you) and ask to play these most inspiring 36 minutes for the congregation ;)

Reframe the Debate, Change: Repub vs Dem to US vs Them

Filed under: Iraq, US Govt, headline news, Democrats — ben @ 12:20 pm

We have a clear case that the president has broken the law, and the Democratic Party has proven itself unwilling to stand up. They are complicit. Enough time has passed, enough evidence has been made public and the Congressional Dems remain on vacation! It was just reported that the spying began BEFORE 9/11. That blows the whole ‘9/11 changed everything’ excuse out of the water….
Yet the Democrats remain silent.

Most of the America wants out of Iraq, but Congress doesn’t care. There is no good reason to stay, except that every 5 days the military-industrial complex scoops up another Billion Dollars of your Children’s money.
And the Democrcats remain silent.

A Zogby Poll says 52% of the public supports impeachment- but evidently, in Congress there is not even 1% support for impeachment- proof that the US Congress does not truly represent the will of the people.
The Democrats are the “loyal opposition” - loyal to Bush, not us.

The Senate is attending to Alito, business as usual… Bush just broke the law, lies and says it’s legal, and they’re content to wait til Feb to discuss it? They’re content to let Alito through, so the Illegal Spying case will go to the Supreme Court…duh!
And the Democrats remain silent.

“Oh well, let’s try to win in 2006.” is their plan- yet there was widespread evidence of election fraud in 2000, 2002 & 2004. What has been done to remedy the situation for 2006? Nothing.
The Democrats are silent on all that matters.

Wake Up America- The DC Democrats are complicit!

That is the problem. Good people across America refuse to believe that most DC “Democrats” are corrupt just like the Repubs. People want to believe that the Dems are fighting for them, because it allows citizens to shirk their responsibility to be informed- ‘the Dems are doing it for me’. No, they are not- and our children, and others around the world, are going to suffer the consequences- because the Good Americans refused to see that the Democrats are complicit.

Flashback: Ollie North & Secret Gov Plans for Martial Law

Filed under: US Govt, Class Warfare, headline news, Impeach — ben @ 9:13 am

This article was headline news in the Miami Herald July 5th, 1987, considering the Katrina Concentration Camps and the Iran War talk, this seems highly relevant again today.

Lt. Col. Oliver North, for example, helped draw up a controversial plan to suspend the Constitution in the event of a national crisis, such as nuclear war, violent and widespread internal dissent or national opposition to a U.S. military invasion abroad.
